Three weeks old is a good milestone for the puppies. They all have their eyes open and are starting to mill around – becoming interested in more than just eating and staying warm. I am beginning to get a sense of their personalities. A couple of them seem so sweet and gentle like Grace, and a couple of them are bouncy and silly like Harry. Others are unique and adorable in their own way.

Sadly, I lost the small sable girl Sparrow at two weeks. It was heartbreaking to lose that super sweet little girl, but it happens sometimes. I’m sure she is in a special puppy heaven.

The other seven puppies are doing well and I expect them to grow into typical, wonderful adult collies.

The puppies are still nursing and Grace is providing them lots of milk for now. However, I have just started letting them lap some puppy formula from a pan to get used to the idea. Their first experience with a pan of puppy milk was typical. They ran through the milk and got it all over me and each other. Most of them actually lapped up some of the milk. I will start adding a little solid puppy food to their milk by Monday. They are already interested in getting into Grace’s food pan. The hardest thing about weaning puppies is getting them to drink water. I always think they are never going to drink water. They usually don’t like it at first, but they have to learn to drink water when they start to eat solid food. They figure it out eventually.

Raising puppies is an adventure I have cherished for over 30 years. Here are some pictures of the puppies at 3 weeks old. They are still wearing a little bit of milk in these pictures.

The puppies will be changing fast now. Every week is a new experience. I feel blessed to get to watch them develop.

Email Debbie if you would like more information about the puppies. As of now I should have a couple of pups still available. Of course they still have to get their vet health check and eye checks in the weeks to come.
